A TEXAS RANGER HEARD JOHNNY RODRIGUEZ SINGING IN A TEXAS JAIL. A FEW YEARS LATER, THE KID FROM SABINAL HAD A NO. 1 RECORD IN NASHVILLE. Johnny Rodriguez was eighteen when he landed in jail around 1970. The old story says he and some friends stole a goat and cooked it. Other accounts say he was serving time over an unpaid fine. Whatever put him behind those bars, it was what happened inside them that changed his life. Johnny started singing. Texas Ranger Joaquin Jackson recognized something in the young man’s voice and told promoter Happy Shahan about him. Shahan brought Johnny to Alamo Village, the western movie set and tourist attraction outside Brackettville, where he sang for visitors, drove a stagecoach and worked with horses. Then two Nashville songwriters happened to hear him. In 1971, Tom T. Hall and Bobby Bare caught Rodriguez performing at Alamo Village and urged him to come to Nashville. Johnny arrived with a guitar, fourteen dollars and no guarantee that Music City would make room for him. Hall did. He put Johnny in his band, helped him find material and introduced him to the people who could open the next door. Less than a year later, Rodriguez had a recording contract with Mercury Records. “Pass Me By (If You’re Only Passing Through)” reached the country Top 10. Then “You Always Come Back (To Hurting Me),” which Rodriguez co-wrote with Hall, became his first No. 1 in 1973. “Ridin’ My Thumb to Mexico” followed it to the top. Rodriguez became country music’s first major Mexican American star, singing mostly in English but allowing Spanish and the sound of South Texas to remain part of the records. The room that changed Johnny Rodriguez’s life was a jail cell. Within a few years, his voice was coming through radios all across America.
