Since Dolly Parton’s passing on August 25, 2026, fans have been sharing old performances that show what she meant to the people around her. One clip stands out. In it, Kenny Rogers, Willie Nelson, Glen Campbell and Emmylou Harris gather with Dolly to sing a song about old friends who are still together after everything life has thrown at them.
Watching it now is bittersweet. Of the five voices in that moment, only two are still with us.
The Performance
The clip opens with Kenny Rogers singing “You Decorated My Life,” his classic love song, in that warm, easy voice fans knew so well. Then Dolly joins Kenny, Willie, Glen and Emmylou for “Full Circle.”
Each of them brings something different. Kenny’s warmth. Willie’s one-of-a-kind phrasing. Glen’s polished musicianship. Emmylou’s clear, aching harmony. And at the center of it all, Dolly.
It feels less like a formal show and more like a group of old friends singing together, which is exactly what it was.
The Song She Chose
“Full Circle” opened Dolly’s 1993 album Slow Dancing with the Moon, and it was released as a single that summer. Dolly co-wrote it with her longtime friend Mac Davis.
The song looks back on a long relationship. It talks about two people who have seen each other at their best and at their worst, through laughter and through tears, and who come out the other side still together and still friends. Some listeners hear it as a love song. Others hear it as Dolly looking back on her whole career. Sung by a stage full of old friends, it could be about all of them.
Old Friends on One Stage
None of these artists were strangers to Dolly.
Kenny Rogers was one of her closest musical partners. Together they topped the charts in 1983 with “Islands in the Stream,” and they kept singing together for decades, on songs like “Real Love” and the 2013 duet “You Can’t Make Old Friends.” When Kenny held his farewell concert in Nashville in October 2017, he said he would not do it without Dolly. She surprised him that night by singing “I Will Always Love You” to him.
Willie Nelson and Dolly recorded “Everything’s Beautiful (In Its Own Way),” a song Dolly wrote, which became a top 10 hit. Years later, in 2020, they reunited on Willie’s Christmas classic “Pretty Paper.” Dolly once said that Willie gave her a Bible one Christmas with the words of his song “Family Bible” inside, and that she would treasure it forever.
Emmylou Harris sang with Dolly as far back as 1976, when she and Linda Ronstadt appeared on Dolly’s TV show. A decade later, the three released the album Trio. Emmylou also took Dolly’s song “To Daddy” to No. 3 on the country chart.
Glen Campbell, one of the most gifted guitarists and entertainers country music ever had, rounded out the circle.
The Voices We’ve Lost
Glen Campbell died in 2017. Kenny Rogers died in 2020. After Kenny’s death, Dolly posted a tearful video tribute to her friend.
“You never know how much you love somebody until they’re gone.”
She said she loved Kenny not only for the music, but as a wonderful man and a true friend.
Then, on August 25, 2026, Dolly herself passed away in Nashville at the age of 80. Her family asked fans to honor her through donations to her Imagination Library, the program that has given hundreds of millions of free books to children.
The Voices Still Singing
Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris are still here, and both have honored her.
When Dolly died, Willie shared a video of the two of them singing “Everything’s Beautiful (In Its Own Way).” Later, in an interview with CNN, he said he had no idea how sick she was the last time they were together. He also revealed that in his most recent studio session, he had recorded his own version of “I Will Always Love You.”
In September 2026, Emmylou stood on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium at the Americana Honors and paid tribute to her friend, before a video Dolly had recorded before her death was played to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The song they once sang together was called “Full Circle.” Watching it today, it is hard not to feel that the circle is closing, and grateful that we got to hear it while it was whole.
