Theresa had been his wife for twenty-three years. Part of his right lung had been gone since 2008. Merle Haggard was born in Oildale, California, in 1937, in a boxcar somebody had converted into a house. His parents had driven out of Oklahoma four years before that with what they could carry. His father died when he was nine. After that he was mostly put in rooms and got out of them. Juvenile hall, reform school, county jail. He escaped seventeen times. In 1958, twenty years old and drunk, he tried to break into a restaurant he believed was closed. It was not. San Quentin held him almost three years. On New Year’s Day 1959 he sat in that prison’s audience and watched Johnny Cash play. He did not tell Cash he had been there until long after they were friends. He was paroled in 1960 and dug ditches for his brother. Then: “Strangers.” “Mama Tried.” “Hungry Eyes.” The song about a condemned man’s last walk, written for someone he had known inside. The song about not smoking marijuana in Muskogee, which made him the voice of people who never once asked what he actually thought. Thirty-eight number ones. In 1972 a governor who would later be president signed his pardon. Twenty-two years after that, Nashville gave him the Hall of Fame. He toured until his lungs stopped him. He went home. He named the date, and he was right.

She was buying back a childhood.” Loretta Webb was born in 1932 in Butcher Hollow, Kentucky — a coal-mining holler with no running water. She married at 15. She had four children before she turned 20. In 1966, she and Doolittle took a wrong turn while house-hunting and found an abandoned plantation home in Tennessee. Nobody had lived in it for twenty years. She wanted it immediately. But the man who owned the house also owned Hurricane Mills. The only way to get the house was to buy the entire town. They bought the town. Then she built something on that land nobody expected: a replica of the Kentucky cabin she’d grown up in. A poor girl’s shack, rebuilt on property she owned outright. On October 4, 2022, she died in her sleep in that house, with the cabin still standing outside. She was 90. The circle took ninety years to close.
