On November 4, 2020, Billy Joe Shaver was laid to rest at Waco Memorial Park in Texas, near two people whose lives had shaped his music more than almost anyone else: his wife, Brenda, and their only son, Eddy.

The legendary songwriter had died on October 28 at the age of 81. A public visitation was held the day before his burial, giving friends and admirers an opportunity to say goodbye.

For country music fans, Billy Joe Shaver left behind an extraordinary collection of songs. But one of his most personal compositions, “Live Forever,” carried a story that became even more meaningful after the deaths of Brenda and Eddy.

The Father and Son Who Wrote “Live Forever”

Long before the family tragedies, Billy Joe Shaver and Eddy Shaver shared something special: music.

Eddy was an accomplished guitarist who performed and recorded alongside his father. Together, they made music under the name Shaver, including the acclaimed 1993 album Tramp on Your Street.

One of the album’s most enduring songs was “Live Forever.”

In an interview with Terry Gross on NPR, Billy Joe Shaver explained that the song began with Eddy’s melody. Billy Joe carried that melody around for months, searching for words worthy of it.

Eventually, the lyrics came together, and Eddy helped finish them.

Neither could have known how much emotional weight the song would carry in the years ahead.

Two Losses That Changed Everything

Billy Joe Shaver’s relationship with Brenda was complicated but enduring. They married, divorced twice, and married each other three times.

Despite their difficulties, Brenda remained central to his life. In 1999, Brenda died.

Then, on December 31, 2000, Eddy Shaver died at the age of 38.

For Billy Joe, losing his wife and only son within such a short period was devastating. Eddy had been more than family. Eddy was his guitarist, songwriting partner, and close companion on the road.

Willie Nelson, who had experienced the loss of a son himself, offered Billy Joe advice during that painful period. In a later interview, Billy Joe recalled Willie helping him understand that he could not spend the rest of his life blaming himself for things he could no longer change.

Music remained one way Billy Joe continued his connection with Eddy.

The Small Texas Flag at Eddy’s Grave

One of the most revealing moments in Billy Joe Shaver’s story was documented by journalist Michael Corcoran.

During a visit to Eddy’s grave, Billy Joe noticed a small Texas flag someone had placed in the ground.

The flag carried a simple message:

“You will always be around.”

Billy Joe picked it up and recognized the connection to “Live Forever,” the song he and Eddy had written together.

Billy Joe then remembered how Eddy had first played that beautiful melody for him, and how determined he had been to write something special enough to accompany it.

That small flag was a reminder that the song had become meaningful to people beyond the family who created it.

The Music That Stayed Behind

Billy Joe Shaver had already secured his place in country music history through songs recorded by Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, and others.

Yet “Live Forever” remained especially personal.

During later concerts, Billy Joe sometimes looked upward and told Eddy that he loved him. Audiences who understood the history behind the song heard more than an ordinary performance.

When Billy Joe was buried near Brenda and Eddy in November 2020, their family story had reached its final chapter.

But the music continued.

And somewhere between Eddy’s original guitar melody, Billy Joe’s words, and that little Texas flag beside a grave, “Live Forever” had already become exactly what its creators hoped a good song could be: something that would remain long after the people who wrote it were gone.
